Technical Papers
To introduce users to some of the more complex or innovative features of the WERS 2004 data, we intend to produce four technical papers over the course of our two-year grant (February 2006 – January 2008). The papers will take the form of short introductions (15-20 pages), with references to further reading being given where appropriate.
The intended papers are as follows:
- Analysis of financial data: This paper will focus on the opportunities and challenges provided by the new FPQ and the link to ABI. The paper will outline the extent and quality of the data available from these new sources. It will also compare and contrast the data available in the FPQ and the ABI, as well as making comparisons with the subjective measures in the WERS Cross-Section and Panel Surveys. Scheduled release: October 2006.
- New and innovative data items: This paper will introduce users to new or innovative data items in WERS 2004. It will cover such items as the business strategy and trust questions in the Management Questionnaire (KPRICE-KRANK, ETRUSA1-ETRUSB3), and the well-being and job satisfaction questions in the Survey of Employees (A9, A8), among others. The paper will discuss the origins of the questions, referencing either relevant literature or other surveys from which they have been derived. It will also discuss methods of analysis. Scheduled release: February 2007.
- Analysis of linked data: Drawing on Chesher and Nesheim’s recent report on the statistical properties of linked data sets, together with the literature on the analysis of multi-level or linked data, this paper will introduce users to a variety of issues in respect of the analysis of linked data from WERS (whether MQ-SEQ, MQ-ERQ; or MQ-FPQ/ABI). Topics covered will include: non-response biases; measurement errors (especially in respect of the MQ-ABI link); sampling errors; and (in respect of the MQ-SEQ link) multi-level modelling. Scheduled release: September 2007.
- Topic to be confirmed. May cover the analysis of the WERS panel data sets, updating the earlier technical paper produced by the WERS Data Dissemination Service on the analysis of compositional and behavioural change using the panel survey and associated datasets (WERS98 paper). Scheduled release: February 2008.
