WERS 2004 - Obtaining data

The publicly available data files from WERS 2004 are available from the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS): http://www.esds.ac.uk/

The data files can be located in the Data Catalogue by entering either of the following terms in the search box:

  • Title: WERS 2004
  • Study Number: 5294

In addition to the full data files, a WERS 2004 Teaching Dataset is also available from the ESDS (Study Number 5897).

Entering Study Number 33176 or going to the Workplace Employee Relations Survey datasets web page will locate all of the surveys in the series.

From there, users can download the deposited data files or order copies to be sent on CD. The data files are available for download in SPSS, STATA and ASCII tab-delimited formats. Other formats may be available upon request.

Users will require a personal Athens account to obtain the data files. All users using data for non-commercial purposes can download the data at no cost, but handling and p&p fees will apply to those requesting data on CD.

The Data Catalogue also provides open access to on-line versions of the documentation that comprises the WERS 2004 User Guide. These documents are also available on this web-site.

Restricted data files

All WERS 2004 data files are available from the ESDS. These data have been anonymised to protect the identity of individual respondents and participating establishments.

Additionally, in workplaces where managers consented to the linking of WERS data with other data sources ( MLINKDAT=Yes), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has linked data from WERS 2004 to the Annual Business Inquiry, the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings and the Business Structure Database. Due to ONS restrictions on access to these data, these linked datasets will only ever be available via the Virtual Microdata Laboratory operated by the Business Data Linking section at the ONS. Further information on access procedures can be found at: http://www.ons.gov.uk/about/who-we-are/our-services/unpublished-data/business-data/vml/index.html
