WERS 2004 Sponsors

The web sites of the four sponsors of WERS 2004 may be accessed below:

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)

Government responsibility for each of the four surveys in the WIRS series has rested with the department holding responsibility for employment relations. In 1980, 1984 and 1990 this was the Department of Employment. By 1998, however, this area had become the responsibility of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Staff from the relevant Department have headed the Research Team for each of the five surveys.

WERS 2004 is the responsibility of the Employee Market Analysis and Research Department of the Employment Relations Directorate of the DTI. The EMAR home page contains a variety of WERS-related materials, including a selection of the documents available on this site.

Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS)

ACAS has been a sponsor of the WERS series since the second survey in 1984. Responsibility for each survey within ACAS has rested with the Research Division. Staff from ACAS were present on the Research Team in 1990, 1998 and 2004.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The first survey in the WIRS series (1980) was sponsored by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC). Renamed as the ESRC in the early 1980s, it has continued to sponsor each of the subsequent surveys in the series.

The ESRC is the sole funder of the WERS 2004 Information and Advice Service.

Policy Studies Institute (PSI)

The Policy Studies Institute has been a sponsor of each of the five surveys in the WIRS series. For the first four surveys, participation was made possible by funding from the Leverhulme Trust. For the fifth survey, funding came from the Nuffield Foundation. Researchers from PSI have formed part of the Research Team for each survey in the series.
